A faint skunk smell that drifts through the neighborhood once in a while is normal in Kentucky. A skunk smell that keeps coming back around your house — especially at night, especially near your foundation, deck, or porch — usually means something more specific: a skunk has moved in underneath.
Here's how to tell the difference between a passing skunk and a resident one, and what to do about it.
Why the Smell Keeps Coming Back
Skunks den under structures — decks, porches, sheds, and crawl spaces are all prime real estate. A denning skunk doesn't spray its own home, but it carries a persistent musky odor that seeps up through floorboards and vents. If the smell is strongest in the evening and early morning, that tracks with a skunk's activity schedule: they leave the den at dusk to forage and return before dawn.
The smell gets dramatically worse in two situations: late winter mating season (February and March in our area), when males spray during competition, and any encounter with a pet. If your dog has been sprayed near your own deck more than once, the skunk isn't visiting — it lives there.
Other Signs of a Skunk Den
Look for a freshly excavated hole 4 to 6 inches wide near the foundation of a deck, shed, or porch, often with a small fan of dirt outside it. Skunks also leave shallow cone-shaped holes in lawns where they dig for grubs — if your yard looks like someone practiced with a golf club overnight, a skunk is a prime suspect.
Timing matters. From May through early summer, a denning female likely has kits with her. Removal during this window has to account for the babies — sealing the den entrance with kits inside creates an odor and sanitation problem far worse than the skunk itself.
